So these kids are in an academy, they’re allowed to murder each other, and there are no adults or actual humans to keep order. What a nightmare. Will the story answer why this is legal?

Thank you so much for your question and feedback! The legality and ethics are intentional parts of the worldbuilding. Everyone except Ava willingly joins the academy after agreeing to the risks because the reward is the chance to shape and rule a virtual world. Ava’s arrival is an anomaly, so she never had the opportunity to consent or walk away.

I’m specifically referring to the kids who signed up on purpose. If I’m understanding correctly, it’s legal because they get to rule virtual worlds. Is that correct? 👀

So… this may be confusing because I’ve revised it so many times that I’m starting to forget which version I landed on. 😂

Murder isn’t legal in either the VR world or the academy. The students aren’t battling to the death (à la The Hunger Games); they’re being tested on their use of “c-skills” to better prepare them to rule the world.

There is supposed to be oversight. That’s why there are security measures, professors, etc. But there’s a gray area that students exploit to gain an advantage in this highly competitive school. They do things like create monsters, throw rocks at each other, or otherwise be total jerks without technically breaking the rules.

Hope that clears things up!
